Attempt to rape a 13-year-old girl in the Chuguyiv region: appeal results in 15 years in prison
The Kharkiv appellate court upheld the sentence of a man who attacked a 13-year-old girl in the Chugayev district on July 20, 2024, sentencing him to 15 years in prison. The appeal confirmed the attacker's intent, as he had previously served a sentence for a similar crime. His appeal, denying guilt, was rejected.
The Kharkiv appellate court rejected the appeal and upheld the sentence against a man who was convicted of attacking a 13-year-old girl in the Chuguyiv district. The prosecution announced this. The sentence is 15 years in prison.
According to the case materials, on July 20, 2024, an intoxicated man was chasing a 13-year-old girl on the street, knocked her to the ground, and attempted to sexually assault her by pressing her mouth shut. A passerby intervened, hearing the girl's cries, pushed the attacker away, and saved the child. The victim sustained multiple injuries and was hospitalized.
The first-instance court found the man guilty of attempted sexual assault of a minor, committed repeatedly (Article 15, paragraph 3, and Article 152, paragraph 6 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). Previously, in 2012, he had already been sentenced to 10 years for a similar crime involving sexual assault and robbery, and he was released in 2021.
The appellate court confirmed that the defendant's intent was sexual, not motivated by self-interest. He did not admit guilt and, in his appeal, argued that he only wanted to take the girl's phone, but the court upheld the original verdict.
