The counterintelligence service of the SBU exposed and detained a former lawyer who, at the behest of Russian special services, had enlisted in an elite battalion of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Airborne Assault Troops and was providing the occupiers with information about the positions of his unit in the Kharkiv region.
According to the SBU, the man was collecting and sending information about the location and movements of the brigade he served in, to the FSB. Spokesperson of the SBU in Kharkiv Oblast, Vladislav Abdula, stated that at the beginning of the full-scale war, the individual was already serving a sentence for illegally disseminating information about the Armed Forces, and after being released, he was contacted by an FSB employee who offered cooperation in exchange for "evacuation" to Russia. To carry out the task, the man enlisted in the army.
During the search, his smartphone containing evidence of communication with a Russian intelligence agency was seized. Investigators informed the suspect of a suspicion under Article 2 of Part 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason during martial law), and the court placed him under arrest. He faces a life sentence with confiscation of property.
The SBU stated that the exposure of the agent helped to secure the positions of Ukrainian soldiers and thwart the combat operations of the occupiers in the eastern direction.
