In 1998, the United States sent the oldest astronaut, 77-year-old John Glenn, into space. In 2015, the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party announced its abandonment of the one-child policy. This decision was made at the plenum of the Party's Central Committee, and from January 1, 2016, all married couples in the country were allowed to have two children.
A one-child policy has led to an "age and gender imbalance" in the population, particularly an increase in the proportion of older people and a decrease in the working-age population. In 2021, the government lifted all restrictions on birth rates, but this did not lead to a significant increase in fertility. The population of China has been declining for four consecutive years (until 2025), and the number of registered marriages decreased by approximately 7.5% in the first half of 2026.
